Packing

Packing for a motorcycle trip is an art form. It is a balancing act of packing the minimum amount of items, but not leaving out something you absolutely must have in certain situations. The riding gear is sometimes tricky, as it is for this Canada trip. We will go from the heat and humidity of the mid-west to potentially 40’s and rain in the northern latitudes. That is a wide range and means carrying both cold/wet gear and summer mesh gear. We intend to camp whenever possible and that means all kinds of camping gear as well. Generally, camp equipment made for backpacking works well with motorcycles as it packs small and light. Regular clothing isn’t much of a problem as many campgrounds and hotels have laundry facilities. There are a few extra items for this trip simply due to the remoteness of some areas we’ll pass through.

Here is a list of what goes on the bike:

  • Aerostich Darian jacket, pants, and heated liner
  • Tour Master mesh jacket and pants
  • Wind stopper pullover
  • 3 pairs of gloves for various weather conditions
  • TCX boots, Merrell hiking shoes, Crocs
  • Baseball cap and bug hat with mosquito netting
  • Approximately 6 days of clothing
  • Shower kit
  • Book/magazines and reading glasses
  • GPS and maps
  • Cannon Powershot G9 camera and 60 inch tripod
  • Kodak camera for back-up
  • 10 inch tablet for blogging
  • Binoculars
  • Basic tools, chain lube, shop rags
  • Stop & Go tire plug kit and mini air compressor
  • AntiGravity power supply for jump starts and phone charging
  • First aid kit
  • LED headlamp and small tent lantern
  • Vuz Moto tent (yes, it’s big enough to park a bike in the vestibule)
  • Yahill ultra-lite cot, Exped SynMat7 sleep pad and air pillow
  • Nemo Disco sleeping bag and liner
  • REI camp chair
  • Sea to Summit camp towel and clothes line
  • Rotopax 1.75 gallon fuel pack
